It seems that every time we anticipate the next gen Miata, the larger and heavier it gets. However for 2016, the trajectory we feared didn’t occur. To our satisfaction and to that of any car enthusiast, the new Mazda MX-5 has lost weight (a dramatic amount of weight). At the scales, the new MX-5 is almost as light as the first generation car that debuted 30 years ago. That achievement in it of itself is remarkable. However does the 2016 Mazda MX-5 have the charm that has made it special in the first place?
The answer is a resounding yes.
From the moment you walk up to the convertible roadster, you’ll notice the proportions, which are a blend of British roadsters from yesterday and short overhangs from today that manage to hug each wheel. Whether it’s a 4 lug setup, or the manner in which the rear was designed, every aspect of the new MX-5 was designed to maximize performance and minimize weight.
Power for the Miata comes from a 2-liter motor producing 155hp, which propels the rear wheels in true roadster fashion. While the power may seem meager, the low curb weight allows the MX-5 to arrive to 60 in a respectable 7 seconds. However, to focus on acceleration would be the miss the point of this vehicle. The charm of the Miata is the manner it can take its 50/50 distribution and allow you to enter and exit corners without shaving off any speed. The suspension is compliant and a bit on the soft side, but makes for an entertaining time especially when the roads begin to twist.
The interior of the Mazda MX-5 continues the motif of less is more. The steering wheel is perfectly sized, along with seats that provide bolster support that doesn’t effect your corner exit. Amenities in the interior include full Bluetooth functionality and cleverly packaged controls for your air conditioning and radio. It’s a very comfortable place to be in, and only gets better when you put the top down.
